The fourteenth century was very a different time, one that saw the rise of national powers in conflict with papal dominance and with each other. Loyalties were continually changing; the political world was unstable, and the papal schism further complicated this shifting imbalance. Yet in close communion with God, Catherine of Siena lived an active public life sustained by a deeply spiritual personal one. This book presents the life of St Catherine of Siena and follows the essential stages of her human and spiritual development as exemplified in her symbolic “Tree of Virtue” with its circle of soil, trunk and crown that would evolve into the “Tree of the Cross”.
