New Seeds of Contemplation is a classic spiritual work, much loved by both long time readers of Merton and those who are new to Merton's writings. The book is a collection of notes and personal reflections focused on the subject of contemplation. Each of its thirty-nine short chapters is born of the depths of a maturing solitude, a solitude that was able to reach out into the experience of unity with others. It describes contemplation in a way which is accessible to people of all religious traditions, reflecting Merton’s universality, and also expresses his continually unfolding reflection on the place of the “self” in relationship with God.

Merton describes contemplation as our free and personal reality becoming fully alive to its own depths. It is an awakening to the real, our being carried away by God into his own mystery. Merton offers forth the gift of contemplation as that which can return us to our own being and, with nuance born of deep experience, guides the reader through the confusions of separation and solitude, insensitivity and detachment, to present a vision of deepest freedom found in union with God alone. A modern spiritual classic which comes highly recommended.
