| Description: |
Traditional religion in the United States has declined sharply in recent decades. Fewer Americans identify with a religion, attend services, or believe in God, while more describe themselves as "spiritual but not religious." Scandals involving sexual abuse, financial misconduct, and institutional cover-ups have further damaged trust in organized religion. These changes are especially strong among younger generations, suggesting the decline will continue as less-religious Americans replace older, more-religious populations.
Christian Smith examines why this shift is happening. Drawing on survey data and interviews, he argues that major social and cultural changes, including the internet, changing attitudes toward gender and sexuality, and post-Cold War transformations, have made traditional religion seem less relevant. However, Smith contends this does not signal a purely secular future, as spiritual impulses are emerging in new forms. |
