The Jesuit Order, founded on Ignatian principles, has numbered in its own ranks outstanding leaders. However, importantly, through their educational ministries, the Jesuits have produced notable lay leaders who have something special to offer the world.
Ignatian principles are countercultural; they are grounded in the gospel of Jesus Christ and stand in opposition to the dominant values of secular culture. Ignatius would identify those dominant secular values as "riches...honour...pride" (Spiritual Exercises 142). The countercultural values he recommends are "poverty...insults...humility" (Spiritual Exercies 146). These are explained in subsequent sections of the book.
The challenge of this book is to translate authentic Ignatian principles into practical guidelines for effective leadership in contemporary secular culture.
