Description: The Community of Believers is a volume of essays and associated religious texts which were presented at the 2013 Building Bridges seminar under the stewardship of Georgetown University. The seminar’s purpose was to promote dialogue in timely areas of Christian/Muslim relations all focussing on issues of community.

The book is organised according to three major themes with the first one considering the nature and purpose of community. From the Christian perspective this is explored in terms of the tension between two encompassing models of Church; the Church as the mystical body of Christ versus the Church as proclamation. From the Muslim viewpoint, the roots and use of the term ummah and its development as a concept over time, are explored. The second theme focuses on unity and disunity in the life of both the Christian and Muslim communities. In terms of Christianity, perspectives are explored around desires for communion, experiences of division and approaches to unity while the history of Muslim disunity is detailed even though the community maintained cohesion in terms of devotional and ritual praxis. The final theme addresses continuity and change in the life of the community. The Arab Spring is presented as a case study with issues like accommodationism, conservatism, reformism and militant extremism or fundamentalism as Muslim strategies in addressing the pressure of modernity. The Vatican II Council is seen as significant in shaping 20th Century ecclesiology.
The volume also includes texts and commentaries used in the seminar’s discussions of each topic and a concluding essay summarising the tone, content and style of participant exchanges through the seminar. The format of the book provides readers with a strong source for developing new conversations between Christians and Muslims as well as bringing new topics to bear on existing dialogue efforts.
