Description: This book by Bishop Ford, one of the four earliest pioneers of Maryknoll missioners sent to China, had its origins in spiritual talks delivered to the Maryknoll Sisters in China. It was originally published soon after his death in a Chinese prison camp.

Concerned with the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of Christians, it remains a classic of twentieth-century spirituality and continues bear a message for all Christians about the role of the Holy Spirit in the life of prayer, mission, service, and discipleship.

Fr. Benedict Groeschel writes in his introduction, "It offers an insight into the soul of a man who was eventually to pay for his spiritual convictions with his life. In some ways it also gives an insight into the entire missionary effort of the American Catholic Church in the first part of the twentieth century."

After many years of service in southern China, Bishop Ford was named the first bishop of Kaying. After the Communist Revolution he was arrested and charged with espionage. Enduring harsh treatment, he died in prison on February 21, 1952. His cause for canonization is in process.
