| Description: |
Volume 2, Jesus and the Pharisees in the Politics of Roman Palestine, challenges traditional scholarly frameworks that often oversimplify a complex historical reality. It highlights a major conflict that has largely been overlooked: the political, economic, and religious struggle between layers of Roman, Herodian, and high-priestly rulers and the majority of Judean and other Israelite people.
This struggle was intensified by popular and dissident scribal movements, as well as by widespread revolts in 40-37 BCE, 4 BCE, and 66-70 CE, all sparked by repeated conquest and exploitation by ruling powers.
Taking a broader historical approach, the book shows that the Gospel stories are grounded in Israelite popular tradition. The conflict with the Pharisees reflects a deeper divide between the scribal traditions developed by the Pharisees and others, and the village-based traditions of ordinary Israelites. These village communities, where Jesus taught, focused on renewing the Mosaic covenant that had shaped Israelite life for generations. |
